The steps on this page describe the classic Reference panel, Image Scale, Move Image, and Add Trace Frame controls. They are available at /editor/classic. Use a separate project backup when moving between classic projects and the current v4 editor.
In the current editor, choose Reference or Layers → Import reference layer. Adjust its layer opacity and cel offsets. Reference layers remain visible in the editor preview and stay in editable projects. Rendered exports omit them by default; enable Include reference layers when you deliberately want them in the output.
How it works
Choose your grid
Use New Project to create a blank canvas, such as 16 × 16 or 32 × 32. Keep a backup of existing work when prompted.
Load a reference
Open Reference → Load Image and choose an image from your device.
Line it up
Adjust Opacity and Image Scale. Use Move Image to position the reference, then finish adjusting. For a pixel reference, Match 1:1 Pixels aligns one source pixel with one canvas cell.
Draw your version
Select Pencil and a color, then trace the shapes you want. Use Eraser, Fill, and additional Layers as needed. Add Trace Frame creates another blank frame over the same reference.
Save your work
Choose Export → Current Frame for a PNG of your artwork. Use Save Project for an editable backup that also includes the reference.
What is included
Reference loading, positioning, tracing, layers, PNG downloads, and project backups are free. Choose from square canvases of 8, 16, 24, 32, 48, 64, 96, 128, or 256 pixels per side. The reference stays on your device and is excluded from exported artwork, but it is included in your saved .pixelwall project.
Common questions
Does PixelWall automatically convert a photo into pixel art?
No. The image is a drawing reference. You choose the colors and place the pixels yourself. Supported sprite strips can also be imported directly as editable frames.
Will the reference show up in my PNG?
No. Artwork exports include your visible drawing layers, not the projected reference. A saved .pixelwall project includes the reference so you can continue tracing later.
Can I trace one sprite at a time from a sheet?
Yes, when PixelWall detects a supported horizontal or vertical strip of square sprites. Choose Use … Grid if offered, then use Previous sprite and Next sprite to align each reference with the canvas. Use Add Trace Frame when you need another blank drawing frame.
